Accommodations

What is an accommodation?

An accommodation is a change that removes a barrier to learning or getting work done. To begin, we must identify the barrier. Is it a loud room, written text, lack of structure, or something else? Next, we must identify how we can adjust for our students to overcome this barrier.

Accommodations do not change what a student is learning (content), but instead change how the learning (content) is provided and how students are able to show their understanding of learning (content).

Accommodation vs. modification

While accommodations do not change the expectations for learning, reduce the requirements of the task, or change what the student is required to learn, modifications do change what a student is learning, the requirements, and the tasks. Accommodations do not change what a student is learning (content), but instead change how the learning (content) is provided and how students are able to show their understanding of learning (content).
